The Street Fighter movie dropped its official trailer today and the internet is already losing its mind. Set in 1993, the film follows estranged fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) as Chun-Li (Callina Liang) pulls them into the brutal World Warrior Tournament. Behind the punches sits a deadly conspiracy led by M. Bison (David Dastmalchian). Release hits theaters October 16, 2026.
This is the part nobody's talking about yet: the trailer leans hard into camp. It's scored to "What's Up?" by 4 Non Blondes and delivers one over-the-top fight after another. Early reactions suggest it might actually capture that arcade energy better than the 1994 version.
Ryu and Ken start as estranged allies forced back into combat. Their complicated history drives the emotional core while the tournament serves as the battlefield. Chun-Li recruits them, but the event hides something far darker than prize money.
The filmmakers clearly pulled from the first two games plus Street Fighter Alpha elements. Expect classic rivalries, supers, and that signature fighting game vibe translated to live-action.
The lineup mixes wrestlers, actors, and fighters into one wild roster:
Supporting roles include Orville Peck as Vega, Olivier Richters as Zangief, Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, and Eric André in a mystery part.
This cast screams star power. Having actual wrestlers like Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes in fighting roles feels perfect for the tone.
Fights come fast and colorful. The color grading nails that vibrant arcade aesthetic. Signature moves appear throughout including Hadoukens and powerful kicks. The camp factor is high but the choreography looks committed.
The 1993 setting grounds it in the era when Street Fighter II ruled arcades. Costumes look faithful without feeling like cheap cosplay.
"Chubby El Fuerte and Cammy’s heel turn to be Harley Quinn wasn’t what I expected but this looks like a fun schlocky take. I actually kind of like Ken and Ryu’s vibe here. And Cody Rhodes as Guile is choice."

"That shit looks so good. Glad they’re making Ken the main character."

"I really really like this, the color balance they went for is exactly what I expect from a Street Fighter movie, the costume also look like they belong there. Ken as the protagonist was the right call, I'm Super excited."

The 1994 Street Fighter film with Jean-Claude Van Damme became a cult classic for all the wrong reasons. This version seems to embrace the absurdity instead of fighting it. Director Kitao Sakurai brings a different energy than previous adaptations.
Producers include Jason Momoa himself plus industry vets. The goal appears to be honoring the legacy across games, anime, and now film while delivering something fresh.
Social media and Reddit lit up within minutes of the trailer's drop. Many praise the vibrant visuals and commitment to character designs. Others enjoy the goofy tone as a deliberate choice rather than a flaw.
Some question specific casting choices while others celebrate seeing childhood favorites on screen. The consensus so far: it's messy, loud, and potentially a blast.
These questions will only get answered closer to October 16.
Street Fighter looks like the fun, ridiculous adaptation the series has always deserved. It won't win Oscars but it might finally give fighting game fans something to cheer for in theaters. The trailer delivers exactly what it promises: colorful brawls, big personalities, and that unmistakable arcade spirit. I'll be there opening weekend to see if the full movie lands the combo. If it does, this could be the start of something bigger for the franchise.
The movie arrives at the perfect time too. Street Fighter remains one of gaming's most enduring properties. A successful film could bring new players to the games and remind everyone why these characters still matter decades later.
