I've played hundreds. These are the ones I keep coming back to. No filler. No "honorable mentions." Just the essentials.
Balatro is poker for people who hate poker. A roguelike deckbuilder where you play illegal hands, stack Jokers with absurd multipliers, and watch scores explode. Solo dev LocalThunk created the most addictive game of 2024.
It's chaotic. It's unfair sometimes. And you will say "one more run" until 3 AM.
Metroid Dread is the smoothest 2D action game on Switch. MercurySteam fixed everything. Samus vaults over ledges, chains melee attacks, and moves like a predator. The E.M.M.I. robots actually inspire fear — something Nintendo rarely pulls off.
Eight hours. No padding. Just pure, punishing exploration.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses is a 200-hour tactical RPG set in a magical military school. You teach. You host tea parties. You befriend students. Then a civil war breaks out and everyone tries to kill each other.
Four different routes. Complex characters. Turn-based combat that rewards smart positioning. It's exclusive to Switch and absolutely massive.
Hollow Knight didn't originate on Switch. But Nintendo's console made it a phenomenon. Team Cherry's Metroidvania is hand-drawn, brutally difficult, and hauntingly beautiful.
I spent a six-hour flight grinding through Hallownest. That stretch of pure rapture still sticks with me. If Silksong ever releases, it has massive shoes to fill.
Released in March 2020. Perfect timing. Animal Crossing: New Horizons became a lifeline during lockdown. Building your island, hunting bugs, visiting friends — it was therapy disguised as a video game.
Is it the deepest game? No. But it's one of the most important. The 2.0 update added cooking and Kapp'n's boat tours. Tom Nook still owns your soul.
Super Mario Odyssey is joy in cartridge form. The Cappy mechanic lets you capture enemies, objects, and even a T-Rex. Every kingdom is stuffed with Power Moons — over 800 of them.
The movement is so tight that just running in circles feels good. No revolution. Just perfection.
96 courses. 48 from the base game, 48 from the Booster Course Pass. Anti-gravity, underwater sections, gliding. It's the best Mario Kart ever made.
Mount Wario is still the king. Top-to-bottom ski mountain racing with a banger soundtrack. If you own a Switch and don't own MK8D, fix that.
Every character ever. 80+ fighters. Sora. Sephiroth. Banjo-Kazooie. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a fighting game museum that actually works.
The single-player is fine. The online is acceptable. But local multiplayer? Chaos. Beautiful, screaming chaos.

Tears of the Kingdom takes Breath of the Wild and adds sky islands, an underground Depths, and the absurd Ultrahand building system. You can build a mech. You can build a flying death machine. You can attach a rocket to a log and pray.
It's Breath of the Wild meets Jackass. The sheer scale is mind-boggling. The Depths reveal alone made me pace around my apartment.
Breath of the Wild changed everything. Before BOTW, open-world games meant dotted lines and icon bloat. After BOTW, every developer copied its structure. Genshin Impact. A Short Hike. Elden Ring.
Every hill hides a puzzle. Every forest has a secret. The physics system creates stories you tell for years. No other game on Switch captures that first-time magic.

You don't need 100 Switch games. You need these 10. Zelda, Mario, Smash, Kart, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Hollow Knight, Animal Crossing, and Balatro. That's a generation of gaming right there.
The Switch 2 is coming. But these games aren't going anywhere.
